John Grzinich worked since the early 1990s as an artist and cultural coordinator with various practices combining sound, installation, moving image, site-specificity, and collaborative social structures. He has performed and exhibited in North/South America, Europe and Japan. The focus of his work in recent years has been to combine sound and listening practices with various media to challenge age old anthropocentric perceptions of the world we inhabit. CDs of his compositions have been published on such labels as SIRR (PT), Staalplaat (NL), Edition Sonoro (UK), Mystery Sea (BE) CUT (CH), CMR (NZ), erewhon (BE), Intransitive Recordings (US), Digital Narcis (JP) Taalem (FR) Semper Florens (RU), and Cloud of Statics(CH).
Additionally, he has worked with experimental video production since 2000 often in combination with my audio work. In 2010 I completed his first two film works, ‘mimema’ and a treatise on sound and site-specific activity ‘Sound Aspects of Material Elements’, both of which were screened internationally and then published on DVD by the US label and/OAR (2012). He is continually attempting to rethink the cinematic format with an emphasis on the sonic experience. This emphasises a more animistic view of living landscapes, material objects, the built environment through the complex relations of human and non-human agents.
Since 2003 he has been an event and project coordinator at MoKS, an artist-run international residency centre and project space in southeast Estonia.
